Every now and then, as per usual, I find myself talking to clients about different types of newborn photography session settings. It’s one of my favorite subjects, so I’m always ready to add my piece. I’m used to the usual questions about what props to bring and how long before the shoot should the lovely little bundle be fed. However, more often than ever, the topic of newborn sessions within the home comes up.
Certain Apprehensions …
I’m not surprised. I think it’s a wonderful idea for some parents. Nonetheless, I’m always perplexed by the certain apprehension that some soon-to-be parents show, as though I’d be reluctant to travel to their lovely abodes (I never am!)
Why there’s nothing to worry about
Often, when we look back at our childhood, we think of experiences close to home. It’s where our most vulnerable and fundamental memories are etched. Many people even remember the exact design of their family home sofa well into their golden years alongside other things. Where the TV was placed, how the front door opening sounded.
Our home is our habit and where we’re most comfortable. And as a kid, it’s the first world we know. Most of the photos and videos we have to look back on involve our family and us pottering around within the four walls of our homes.
Kids can be themselves
So, why wouldn’t we want our professional photos to be taken there as well? Also, it simply just suits better for some families, especially for broods with plenty of kids or even just that one sibling. Maybe they don’t particularly like leaving the house or are much more “natural” in their home. That’s normal and entirely acceptable in the world of photography – maybe even preferred.
Getting to capture moments of your family when they’re the most at ease is captivating. I often feel like a fly on the wall. There’s no tension, no unnaturalness,
And what better place to have a newborn than where everything they need is? Where everyone they need around them is? Parents don’t have to fret about packing or traveling; it’s happening where they’re most comfortable.
Parents can relax during in-home newborn sessions
Also, most mothers' bodies and minds react differently to childbirth, even consecutive births can have an entirely new effect on how a mother feels. Either way, a mother wanting to stay within the comfort of their home is entirely understandable. Without any worries, they can effortlessly nurse, feed, tend tom, or change their newborn. Better yet – they can rest, which is exactly what they deserve.
And finally …
The fact that finding changes of clothes is easier goes without saying. But what really underpins the beauty and uniqueness of an in-home newborn session is that everyone is, well … at home. They’re relaxed, brimming with natural emotions, and entirely themselves. There's never any fake smiles or poses, just day-to-day life that is to be captured and cherished forever.
The love of the home naturally shines through in the pictures.
For added convenience and so that parents can spend more time looking after what’s important, I bring along all necessary props to the comfort of your home.
So, don’t hesitate to look forward to and plan a newborn photography session for inside your home. I’m always happy to help and answer any questions you might have!
